A Brief History of Hype Dance Company

Hype Dance Company was founded in January 2005.

Artistic Director Anna Olejnicki had previously run dance academy Sheffield, from 2001, which delivered regular dance classes in Sheffield as well as dance workshops across the region. Prior to that Anna worked performing and teaching in both the community and commercial sectors.

In 2004 dance academy Sheffield received funding from Arts Council England to run a training programme for young, local dancers to train them to teach dance in schools and the community. This helped to supply the demand for dance education work in the area and helped ensure professional high standards of dance work are carried out as a result of sound training. This saw a development in the work that was delivered across the region and with the support from SCEDU in Sheffield; dance academy became Hype Dance, a not-for-profit participatory Hiphop dance company.

October 2005 saw the company move to their own office/studio space above The Leadmill right in the heart of Sheffield’s Cultural Industries Quarter. This will allow the development of classes and courses as well as providing a base for company rehearsals.

With support from Arts Council England the performance company devised and toured their first show ‘You Hearin me?’ across the region in Summer 2006.

The company have recently delivered an education project in partnership with Danceworks UK, Robert Hylton Urban Classicism Company and Renegade Dance Theatre, which took high quality Hiphop dance workshops across the country.
